OBSTETRIC CARE

Dr Gannon has been delivering babies and caring for families for over 20 years. Typically patients book around 8-9 weeks of pregnancy. Patients will then see Dr Gannon over a schedule of 8-10 antenatal visits, first monthly, then fortnightly, and weekly in his St John of God Subiaco Clinic rooms. Dr Gannon specialises in High Risk Pregnancy, having had fellowship training in Maternal Medicine at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin and St Mary’s Hospital in London. He also has a special interest in pre-term labour and birth, normal labour and birth, cervical incompetence and multiple pregnancy, including vaginal twin birth.

GETTING PREGNANT
Pre-conception

Patients with chronic disease e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, benefit from pre-conception counselling. Many other patients will benefit from a discussion on optimising their health prior to conceiving.

Patients who have suffered two consecutive pregnancy losses should consider referral to a gynaecologist. Three consecutive miscarriages is sufficient for a diagnosis of recurrent pregnancy loss and should be investigated.

Dr Gannon worked for 15 years in the Perinatal Loss Service at King Edward Memorial Hospital. He is the Chair of the state Perinatal & Infant Mortality Committee and has lectured and taught on Stillbirth prevention at both national and international meetings.

Women planning a pregnancy should be taking periconceptual Folate, be up to date with cervical screening tests and vaccinations, be aware of carrier screening options, and be at least informally tracking their menstrual cycles.

APPOINTMENTS
First Visit

Before your first visit you will be contacted by our friendly reception staff who will organise booking appointments with both a Midwife and Dr Gannon. Your first visit will include having your blood pressure checked and an ultrasound scan, which will provide you with your printed images of your growing baby. Please arrive with a comfortably full bladder. At this visit you will be given information about screening tests, the schedule of antenatal visits, and briefly discuss your expectations on the type of birth you want.

Follow-up visits

Your antenatal care includes regular ultrasound surveillance of your baby's growth, referrals for tests and administration of necessary antenatal vaccinations. You will see both Dr Gannon and a midwife at each visit. Patients with a negative blood group will receive injections of Anti-Rh(D) in prophylaxis against Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn in the rooms.

ANTENATAL TESTS

Throughout your pregnancy Dr Gannon will request or facilitate certain tests to ensure you and baby are well. Information about each test is listed below:

VACCINATIONS

To keep you and your baby safe Dr Gannon will offer vaccinations. Please see information below regarding each.

POSTNATAL CARE

You will be offered a telehealth consultation with a Midwife 2 weeks after the birth of your baby.

You will have a face-to-face postnatal consultation with Dr Gannon 6 weeks after the birth of your baby. That presents an opportunity to discuss the events of your pregnancy, future pregnancies and family planning.

FEES

Dr Gannon is a no gap provider with all major health funds. Patients with health insurance are fully covered for their baby’s birth, irrespective of mode of delivery or clinical circumstance. Fees from your baby’s Paediatrician and, if/where they are involved in your care, your Anaesthetist are separate.

Fees for antenatal care are not recoverable from private health insurance, but all attract a Medicare rebate. A higher proportion of these fees are rebated once the Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) threshold is exceeded, sometimes prior to, but usually after payment of the Planning & Management Fee (Item 16590) at your 28 week antenatal visit.
